Therapy Consultancy
Raising children is a challenging task. Knowing what our children need in order to thrive and how we can promote this development can be daunting.
Skills for Learning provides a unique consultancy service that aims to address some of the common parenting concerns we have as parents, such as:
- Is my child developing appropriately?
- What should my child be doing or not doing at this age?
- What can I do to make sure they have a smooth transition to kindergarten and then school?
- How do I know if my child is developmentally on track?
- Where do I get help if I am worried?
Skills for Learning can provide individual sessions to address your child’s developmental concerns. We can then provide advice regarding services and resources available to you and your family to address these concerns.
Most of the time, parental concerns require little intervention. But sometimes, a parents ‘gut feeling’ can be the most reliable way of knowing something is not quite right with their child’s development.
Skills for Learning aims to address developmental concerns early and efficiently. Research demonstrates that early intervention is one of the best ways to minimise ongoing developmental issues in children. Which means that the earlier we can address your concerns and get the right help, the sooner you and your family will be able to set goals and track your progress.
We provide a consultative service to help you and your family identify your family’s needs and appropriate resources to address these.
We work in close collaboration with you and your family to achieve the best outcomes. We can liaise with relevant child care providers, schools, and relevant agencies to ensure a holistic approach to your concerns. This also ensures that all relevant people involved in your family’s care are promoting the same principles relating to your child’s care and development.
Some of the common areas of parental concern include:
- Child behaviour: tantrums, ‘tricky kids’, meltdowns, jealousy, aggressivity
- Developmental milestones
- Managing toileting, feeding and other self help skills
- Issues with self regulation
- Separation anxiety
- Fine motor difficulties
- Coordination difficulties
- Difficulty making friends
- Difficulty with play- playing with others or playing alone
- Independence skills- shoe lace tying, dressing, feeding self, putting toys away
Parent Workshops
Skills for Learning works closely with child care and educational providers to offer parents relevant information relating to children’s development. These are offered as group based information sessions. One such workshop is 'Ages and Stages of Early Childhood: Myths and Facts' for parents of children under 5 years of age.
This session is tailored for parents, to provide the latest research about child development in a concise and easy to understand format. Parents will learn about:
- Normal developmental milestones for pre-schoolers;
- The types of learning opportunities your child needs to develop crucial skills for school and beyond;
- The necessary skills for fine and gross motor control, social and emotional regulation, self-help (including sleep and feeding), and thinking skills; and
- Resources available to help promote your child’s development.
Come along to one of our parent information workshops and take away a whole new bag of tricks to encourage, challenge and stimulate your child's development.
If we're not coming to your child care centre soon let them know you are interested and we can work with them to schedule a session.
Kindy Ready
'Kindy Ready' is a kindergarten readiness program for 3 to 4 year olds presented by Skills for Learning. In a small group class, the program:
- Addresses key skills for making a smooth transition to kindergarten;
- Advances your child's fine and gross motor skills, and establish social, emotional, self-help and thinking skills to promote a successful start to kindergarten;
- Is conducted by a registered Occupational Therapist, with many years of experience in helping children and their parents achieve their milestones and goals; and
- Has been developed in accordance with the Department of Education's Early Years Learning Framework.
We can present 'Kindy Ready' in your childcare environment, giving the children the opportunity to practice and develop these important skills in a fun and safe environment before starting kindergarten.
